The original buildings were built in 1958, which included the Administration, adjacent classrooms, and the Media Center. In the last 48 years, numerous additions and buildings were added to the campus, as well as a large athletic park located on the south end of the school site.
The previous campus organizational structure was orthogonal and its focus directed inward. There was no sense of “campus” outside of one small courtyard near the current snack bar. The school needed an injection of new life to permeate throughout the school.
The next phase was to construct a new Electives building to house the schools General Electives courses on the northwest corner, north of the west classroom building. The intent was to remodel space vacated by users moving into the new building, including relocation of the Administration area.
When Design Plus met with the School Building Committee to discuss options for the new building it was noted that there was no longer a need for many of the courses being accommodated in the new building. However there was no clear idea as to what should be done in this phase of new construction. Also, the function of the school as a primary ISP school was changed (area schools were keeping students in their ISP programs within their own districts) so there was no longer a need for extensive ISP facilities. The school’s spatial requirements have changed as course offerings and programs have changed. APS Facilities and Design requested that Design Plus modify the master plan to update its requirements to better serve the current needs of the school. To determine what these needs, a survey was presented to the teachers and staff of the school. From this, we determined the project could address the following needs:
• Remodel and Expand the Administration Office at its current central location
• Provide secure and protected Entry Vestibules
• Provide a New Snack Bar (Add Alt. not accepted)
• Extensive Site Modifications including improved drainage and crreation of accessible routes. Also included are improved student drop-offs and traffic circulation, new landscaping and pedestrian malls, and gathering areas throughout the entire campus.
A new classroom building was built with 7 general classrooms, a new side-by-side suite and a lecture space with the capacity for at least two classes for shared projects or joint presentations. This facilitated the move of most portables off site and freed up open space on campus.
