Due to increased student enrollment and faculty growth in recent years, the Communication and Journalism Department needed to expand and update their space. Portions of the original Communication and Journalism Building dated from 1947. Over the years, various building additions had been constructed. The ground level of the building once housed the University’s printing press, but had been vacant for many years. The historic nature of the building required that its exterior aesthetic qualities be maintained. As part of the renovation, all exterior windows were replaced with new, energy efficient glazing while maintaining a similar appearance as the old. Rooftop structures to enclose new mechanical equipment as requested by UNM’s Physical Plant Department were integrated into the mass of the building. The building received a handsome new coat of stucco that will improve its ability to withstand the weather.
The interior scope of the work included major renovation for approximately 31,000 SF of existing space. In addition to the many architectural spaces requiring modification for handicap accessibility, the majority of the existing mechanical, electrical, and fire suppression building systems were not code compliant. When complete, the renovated, code compliant areas will include 8 classrooms of various sizes, a production studio with auxiliary editing rooms, an administrative suite, lobby and reception space, 35 individual offices, 1 large conference space, 3 lounge areas, and graduate student work areas including space for private conferences. A new interior reading room and exterior trellised courtyard will mark the building’s new main entrance along Redondo Drive.
